Nearly every mock draft had TCU cornerback Jason Verrett going to San Diego. Nonetheless, Verrett said he was surprised when the Chargers called his name with the 25th overall pick.

“I had no idea the Chargers were going to draft me,” Verrett said. “I just prayed on it, and put it in God’s hands, and it worked out really well. I can’t wait to get to San Diego and start working with my new coaches. I’m so excited to be drafted by the Chargers.”

In a draft of surprises, the Chargers followed the script Friday as coach Gary Patterson and Verrett’s family cheered the selection.

Verrett walked on the Radio City Music Hall stage to “Icy” by Gucci Mane. The smile never left his face.

Verrett was the first TCU player invited to New York since LaDainian Tomlinson in 2001. Tomlinson was the No. 5 overall choice of the Chargers.

Verrett only hopes to have a similar career as Tomlinson had in San Diego.

“I spoke with LaDainian a few times, and he gave me some good advice and insight into the game and what it takes to be successful in the NFL,” Verrett said. “He’s a legend from TCU, and I’d love to follow in his footsteps.”

Despite his size at under 5-10, Verrett’s skills — and his résumé — made him a top draft choice. In 37 games at TCU, Verrett recorded 160 tackles, including 10 for loss, with nine interceptions and 34 pass breakups.

He was the Big 12 coaches’ choice for co-defensive player of the year in 2013.
