Bail has been set at $1 million for an 83-year-old Cleburne businessman who is accused of killing his 87-year-old wife at their home.

Samuel Alfred Ball remained in the Johnson County Jail on Wednesday, facing a murder charge, Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford said.

On Monday, Cleburne police found the body of Ball’s wife, Betty Ann Ball, at the couple’s home in the 1600 block of Spring Branch Drive.

A person described as an “informant” called police to report that Sam Ball had said he “killed his wife,” police said in a probable cause affidavit.

Police contacted Ball at his aviation services business at the Cleburne airport. Ball said he and his wife “had argued and fought earlier in the day,” the affidavit stated.

Ball also said his wife “had fallen off a couch and was not breathing,” according to the affidavit.

An officer subsequently went to the home and found Betty Ann Ball on a couch wrapped in a blanket, the affidavit stated.

“Betty Ann Ball had massive trauma to her head and face area that was inconsistent with a ‘fall’ from the couch,” the affidavit said.

Public records show that Sam Ball has provided aviation services for 40 years at Cleburne Regional Airport.
