The Dallas Mavericks returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence. Here are some defining moments from their 2013-14 season.

Win over Phoenix clinches playoff spot: After missing out on the playoffs last year, the Mavericks clinched their 13th playoff spot over the past 14 seasons when they nipped the Phoenix Suns 101-98 on April 12. The victory came in the Mavericks’ 81st game and final home game of the season, and Monta Ellis matched his season-high with 37 points.

Carter’s buzzer-beater shocks the Spurs: Vince Carter drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Mavericks won a wild 109-108 contest at home against San Antonio in Game 3 of a best-of-seven first-round playoff series. Carter received the in-bounds pass from Jose Calderon with 1.7 seconds left, and as time expired, the ball went through the net and set off a wild celebration inside American Airlines Center.

Dirk moves into the top 10: During a 95-83 win in Utah on April 8, Dirk Nowitzki moved past the legendary Oscar Robertson and into 10th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Nowitzki, who scored 21 points in the game against the Jazz, has 26,786 career points and is just 161 points away from passing Hakeem Olajuwon for ninth place on the all-time list. He also is only 528 points from passing Elvin Hayes for eighth place.

Buzzer-beater by Ellis defeats Portland: Playing on the road in one of the NBA’s most hostile venues, Monta Ellis snapped a tie by draining a 21-footer at the buzzer as the Mavericks upset Portland. The score was tied 106-106 before the Mavericks brought it in-bounds with just 1 second left. Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with an efficient 30 points (13-of-23 shooting).

Mavericks force Spurs to a Game 7: Facing playoff elimination while trailing the San Antonio Spurs 3-2 in this best-of-seven playoff series, the Mavericks rallied for a 113-111 victory to force a winner-take-all Game 7. The Spurs led Game 6 81-76 after three quarters and were a perfect 25-0 on the road this season when leading after the third period. But the No. 8-seeded Mavericks got 29 points from Monta Ellis and 22 from Dirk Nowitzki against the NBA’s winningest team.
