Marty Yates of Stephenville is thriving on both the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuits.

He’s earned a berth to the NIRA’s College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., and he’s making great strides in his attempt to qualify for the PRCA’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

In order to qualify for the CNFR, a competitor must finish in the top three in a regional title race in a single event. Yates, a freshman at Hill College, advanced to the June 15-21 CNFR in tie-down roping after finishing third in the NIRA’s Southern Region.

In order to qualify for the PRCA’s Dec. 4-13 National Finals, a competitor must finish in the top 15 in a single event when the regular season concludes Sept. 30. After winning the Guymon (Okla.) Pioneer Days Rodeo last weekend, Yates is ranked 12th in the tie-down roping world race with $23,009 as he attempts to earn his first NFR back number.

Yates is the son of the late Marty Yates Sr., a prize-winning roper who was killed in an auto accident in the 1990s. He’s also a nephew of J.J. Hampton, a former Women’s Professional Rodeo Association champion roper.

“Throughout all of my life, it’s been about being able to be in the big leagues and winning,” Yates said.

Yates is scheduled to compete in the May 23-25 Windy Ryon Memorial Roping event in Fort Worth.

Triple Champion

Richmond Champion of Dublin has been successful in three rodeo organizations.

First, he earned $1.1 million after winning the bareback riding title in March’s RFD-TV The American at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium.

Second, he won the 2013-14 bareback riding title in the NIRA’s Southwest Region, and he’ll ride for Tarleton State at June’s CNFR in Casper.

Third, he’s on pace to qualify for his first National Finals Rodeo. After tying for first in bareback riding at the Guymon rodeo, Champion is ranked No. 4 in the PRCA’s world title race.

Brazile watch

As he attempts to earn a record 12th world all-around title, Trevor Brazile came a step closer by placing in three roping events and earning $11,386 at the Guymon rodeo.

In the PRCA’s all-around standings, Brazile is ranked No. 1 with $76,150. Clayton Hass of Terrell is ranked No. 2 with $31,440.

PBR update

On the Professional Bull Riders’ tour, Fabiano Vieira, a Brazilian who lives in Decatur, earned $25,000 after staying on a bounty bull named King Buck (BMC Bucking Bulls) on Saturday in Colorado Springs. He also pocketed $10,055 after finishing fourth in the Built Ford Tough Series show on Sunday.

Renato Nunes won the title and earned $36,741. In the BFTS world title race, Vieira is ranked No. 1 with 6,658.37 points and Guilherme Marchi is No. 2 with 6,467.93. This weekend, the tour stops in Las Vegas.
