DENVER One good game wasn’t enough to push Elvis Andrus back to the second spot in the Texas Rangers’ lineup, but it might be a start.

The shortstop was eighth, ahead of only pitcher Martin Perez, in the Rangers’ lineup Monday at Colorado a day after he was demoted to ninth in the batting order. Andrus responded by going 1 for 3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly in the Rangers’ 14-3 rout of the Angels.

“Yesterday was a step forward,” Andrus said. “Hopefully I stay that way and keep going forward and keep getting better.”

Manager Ron Washington said that Andrus wasn’t chasing the same kind of pitches that helped contribute to a 4-for-46 slump before he was dropped out of the No. 2 spot. Washington said that he also saw more energy from Andrus and also a more relaxed player at the plate. That was one of Washington’s goals in making the move.

“I saw a guy very conscientious about what he was doing,” Washington said. “Once he finds himself, I’ll put him right back up there.”

Josh Wilson takes a turn as the No. 2 hitter. Wilson knows how to bunt and hit-and-run, traits Washington wants his No. 2 hitter to have, and Washington also wanted a double-switch candidate high in the lineup.
