The UT Arlington baseball team gave up seven runs in the first three innings and UALR held on for an 8-6 win Saturday at Hogan Field in Little Rock, Ark.

UTA (23-25, 12-11 Sun Belt) took advantage of a hit batter, a walk, a botched infield fly and double play to score first. Greg McCall then followed with a two-run home run, his eighth homer of the season, to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.

That lead was short-lived, however, because of Mavericks pitching struggles. Starter Brad Vachon gave up three runs on three hits a walk in just two-thirds of an inning, and in total UTA walked five and gave up six runs before reaching the third inning.

Trailing 7-3 after five innings, UTA tried to rally in the sixth when a UALR error with the bases loaded allowed two runs and made the score 7-5.

After the Trojans (21-25, 7-16) took and 8-5 lead in the seventh, the Mavericks once again tried to rally when Darien McLemore and and Travis Sibley started the eighth inning with hits. McLemore then scored on Derek Miller’s sacrifice fly to left.

Any chance of a comeback ended when Eric Tate and Matt Shortall each struck out to end the inning.

The loss snapped the Mavericks’ four-game winning streak and kept them from reaching .500 for the first time this season.
