GRAND PRAIRIE — Weatherford had the situation it wanted set up with Thursday’s Class 5A bi-district baseball matchup against Keller Fossil Ridge.By winning the coin flip days before the game, Weatherford coach Terry Massey chose a one-game playoff instead of the traditional best-of-three series, hoping his offense would supply enough runs to support starting pitcher Beau Burrows. The gamble was just a little too risky as Weatherford saw its season end at the hands of Keller Fossil Ridge 4-3 at QuikTrip Park. Both Burrows and Ridge starter Kenniel Rivera struggled in the first, each allowing two runs. Rivera settled in after that, throwing 1-2-3 innings in every frame beyond the first, except for the third, where Weatherford (21-8-2) picked up its only other run in the game. The bottom of the third was just slightly better for Fossil Ridge (22-9), the only difference in the game. Two walks set up three consecutive singles, driving in the tying and game-winning runs. Picking up the RBIs were Sergio Mendez and Austin Ingraham. Rivera carried the load on the mound, going all seven innings and allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out 10. His counterpart, Burrows, also recovered well in the latter innings of the game.Burrows allowed four earned runs on five hits while fanning nine Fossil Ridge batters. Two Weatherford hitters smacked triples, Tony Rodriguez to lead off the game and Chase Zamarron in the third, both part of Weatherford’s two scoring rallies.Next, Fossil Ridge will head west for its area-round matchup, playing the winner of El Paso Americas and Amarillo Tascosa.
