The Cleburne Yellow Jackets, No. 2 in the Class 4A state baseball poll, opened the playoffs with a gritty 4-0 win over Fort Worth Trimble Tech in a one-game bi-district playoff Thursday at Arlington Heights Field.

Cleburne junior Dylan Schneider (9-1) pitched the complete game shutout, striking out six, allowing four hits and walking two. He also drove in two runs when it was his turn at the plate.

The Jackets (26-3) added two runs in the top of the fourth inning, and tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

In the fourth, Tyler Fowler reached on a single, and, after stealing second base, scored on Schneider’s RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Daniel Richardson’s RBI single put the Jackets on top 2-0.

That was all the support Schneider would need as he retired 10 consecutive batters in the middle innings.

In the top of the seventh, the Jackets added two insurance runs without recording a base hit. With one out, Fowler drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-0 lead. Schneider followed with a fielder’s choice that scored Stevan Martinez, who had walked, with the final run.

The Bulldogs (12-16) threatened to make things interesting in the seventh when base runners got on after a hit batsman and a walk. But Schneider got the final two outs on a pop-out and groundout to end any comeback attempt.

Trimble Tech sophomore pitcher Pedro Cuellar (5-7) pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Emilio Martinez was 1 for 3 with a double to lead the Bulldogs.

Fowler was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Jackets.

Cleburne, which was in the state title game two years ago and the regional finals last season, faces the winner of Denton Guyer and Saginaw in the area round.
