Eats Beat: Sunday night live, it’s Billy TV

kennedy Billy’s Oak Acres BBQ is on reality TV Sunday night.

But that doesn’t mean everything on the show is totally real — except for pitmaster Billy Woodrich’s barbecue.

“They came in with a script and a premise,” Woodrich said last week, ready for his close-up on the premiere of Spike TV’s Hungry Investors.

The show pits two restaurants competing for a new infusion of capital that might lift one to national fame. Spike TV describes the restaurants as “diamonds in the rough.”

Dallas’ Baby Back Shak won the competition, but Woodrich enjoys scenes with TV chef Tiffany Derry on how to smoke a brisket.

Other scenes, which included a stressful dinner rush, aren’t quite what they seem, Woolrich said.

“The first night, they made me look so bad it wasn’t funny,” he said, “but it comes back around.”

The restaurant will stay open past its usual 5 p.m. Sunday closing for a watch party.

Sunday is also one of two days each week for Billy’s Oak Acres’ chicken-fried steak special. It’s usually open for lunch and dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays and lunch Sundays at 1700 N. Las Vegas Trail, Fort Worth, 817-367-2200, facebook .com/BillysOakAcresBbq.

Anna’s Mexican Grill, owned by former managers from another popular Northeast Tarrant restaurant, is open in Tara Village, 1009 Cheek Sparger Road.
