AUSTIN — Riley Reeves of Class 5A Richland and Domonique Garley of 4A Saginaw will each be playing for UIL girls singles championships after advancing Monday in the state tournament at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.Reeves won her quarterfinals match against Chuyang Guan of San Antonio Johnson 6-0, 6-2, and then beat Rylee Braeden of Houston Cypress 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals.She will play Janice Shin of Houston Clear Lake for the title.Reeves benefited from a good draw, likely due in part to her regional finals win over Southlake Carroll’s Kelley Anderson. Reeves lost to Anderson, a four-year state qualifier, in the District 4-5A finals. Shin ousted Anderson, a Baylor signee, in the semifinals 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.Richland coach Christopher Johnson noted Reeves is the school’s first regional and state placer in tennis.“It’s amazing,” Johnson said. “She’s pretty excited. I knew she had a great chance and could make it with the draw if she showed up.”Saginaw’s Garley will also play in the finals Tuesday morning, taking on Highland Park’s Chandler Carter. Garley won her quarterfinals match over Sumvruta Iyengar of Prosper 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Garley advanced to play Ally Maciel of Richmond George Ranch and outlasted her 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals.Saginaw coach Ric Canterbury said it was steamy-hot in Austin. “But if you’re in shape, it’s perfect,” he said.“Her ability is pretty amazing and the focus is there. She’s a super kid that works out twice a day — tennis and then cardio and strength training. She can go all day.”Carroll stumblesCarroll took both boys and girls singles players and a boys doubles team to the state meet, but came away empty-handed.Eshan Dave advanced after a first-round 6-1, 6-1 win over Colin Markes of Round Rock Westwood. Dave would fall in the semifinals to Peter Leung of Katy Taylor.The doubles team of Collin Alexander and Jack Learmonth was a quarterfinals casualty, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Houston Memorial.Briefly• Ryan Howell and Erik Meendsen of Aledo lost their first match of the season in the semifinals to Highland Park’s Connor LaFavre and Hunter Holman.• Doubles players Kate Bramlett and Elizabeth Morton of Granbury lost their first-round match 4-6, 6-4, 2-6.• Trophy Club Nelson’s mixed doubles pair of Ashton Wunsch and Kyle Green exited in the quarterfinals, losing to Texarkana Texas.• The lone area 3A team was Alvarado’s Dillon Deatherage and Isaac Kil. They lost in boys doubles in the first round, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to a Kilgore tandem.
