Tarleton State, Weatherford College and Hill College will send teams to the College National Finals Rodeo.

In order to qualify for the CNFR, which is scheduled for June 15-22 in Casper, Wyo., a school must finish within the top two in a region in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association after competing in 10 shows throughout the 2013-2014 regular season.

Tarleton’s men made the cut by finishing No. 1 in the Southwest Region after competing in the Tarleton Rodeo last weekend in Stephenville. Tarleton’s women advanced to the CNFR after finishing second in the region behind Eastern New Mexico.

Weatherford College’s men will move on to the Casper championships after finishing second in the region. Weatherford secured a CNFR berth after winning the 2014 Tarleton Rodeo.

In the NIRA’s Southern Region, Hill’s men won last weekend’s Wharton County Junior College Rodeo, which was the final regular-season show. The victory helped Hill finish No. 1 in the Southern Region, ahead of runner-up Sam Houston State.

Tarleton’s men’s are led by Billy Bob Brown, who won the regional men’s all-around title, and Richmond Champion, who finished No. 1 in bareback riding. Colton Herrera won the regional team roping heeling championship.

Meanwhile, Tarleton’s women’s team benefited from Lindsey Nelle Trammell, who finished as the region’s No. 1 barrel racer.

Weatherford College was led by Paul Lewis Melvin, who won the regional steer wrestling title, and Casey Tew, who won the regional team roping heading crown.

Hill College has a long history of sending prize-winning bull riders to the CNFR. This year, Hill is sending Thomas Austin Patterson, who finished as the Southern Region’s top bull rider. Hill also is sending Blane Allen Cox, who won the region’s men’s all-around and tie-down roping titles.

PRCA update

During the past weekend, many of the world’s top competitors participated in pro rodeos in Corpus Christi and Clovis, Calif.

One of them was defending Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association all-around champion Trevor Brazile of Decatur, who won the all-around title at the Clovis Rodeo after earning $6,485 in roping events.

At Corpus Christi’s Buc Days ProRodeo, Brazile won the all-around title after earning $2,327. In the PRCA’s world all-around standings, Brazile is ranked No. 1 with $64,774. Clayton Hass of Terrell is No. 2 with $30,758.

This week, the PRCA’s top hands are in Guymon, Okla. The competition began Monday and Brazile picked $1,565 after finishing second in the steer roping second round.

PBR update

On the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series, 2010 world champion Renato Nunes clinched the title at last weekend’s tour stop in Des Moines, Iowa.

Nunes, who earned $35,750, was the only competitor who stayed on all three bulls.

In the world title race, 2008 world champion Guilherme Marchi, who finished seventh at the Des Moines show, is ranked No. 1 with 6,022.93 points. Fabiano Vieira is ranked No. 2 with 5,674.12.
