Shin-Soo Choo tested his sprained left ankle by running sprints from home plate to first base on Monday afternoon.

The Texas Rangers outfielder said he felt continued improvement in his ankle, however, was not ready to start. Instead, he’ll be available off the bench for the first time since exiting last Monday’s game at Oakland with a sprained left ankle.

Choo could return to the lineup on Tuesday, manager Ron Washington said, and would likely get back into the mix as the designated hitter.

“I’m very close,” Choo said. “Every day I feel a lot better.”

In other injury news:

• Left-hander Derek Holland (left knee surgery): Went through routine fielding drills at first base with Washington to build up more stamina in his left knee. Holland is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday and report back to the Rangers’ complex in Arizona later in the week. Holland said his arm is 100 percent, while his knee is more about 80 percent. “I trust it,” Holland said of his knee. “I’m just not getting as much push off my leg, so just a matter of getting that going.”

• Right-hander Tanner Scheppers (right elbow inflammation): Scheppers was scheduled to meet with team physician Keith Meister on Monday after batting practice to determine whether he can begin throwing again. If cleared, Scheppers could play catch on Tuesday.

• Left-hander Joe Saunders (bruised left ankle): Continuing to rehab in Arizona and is progressing. The team is set to meet about what his next step will be.
