If it were up to TCU, April would never end.

The Horned Frogs are 15-1 during the month and have seen their stock soar in the polls and in the all-important ratings percentage index rankings.

The Frogs (30-13) are up to No. 13 in the latest RPI rankings at Boydsworld.com, an RPI-tracking website. TCU finally moved into the USA Today coaches’ Top 25 at No. 21 after receiving votes the last few weeks.

TCU finishes the month Tuesday night at Stephen F. Austin.

Pitching, of course, has been the leading factor in the Frogs’ surge. TCU has allowed just two earned runs in the last 72 2/3 innings.

Right-hander Jordan Kipper (6-2) has been a big part of that string as the Tuesday night starter. He’ll face right-hander Halden Maynard (0-2) for SFA (17-26), which is hitting .268 as a team. TCU’s team ERA has dropped to 2.30, nearing the nation’s top 10.

The offense has been better, even if the past weekend’s scoring doesn’t reflect it. The Frogs had nine hits Sunday, but several hard-hit balls resulted in outs. Some of those came with runners in scoring position, and TCU left the bases loaded twice.

Kevin Cron, who leads the team with 19 extra-base hits (13 doubles, two triples, and four home runs), said the offense owes a lot to the pitching staff.

“Our pitchers make it really easy for us. If we put two or three runs across in the early innings, they’re going to keep us in the game. That sort of takes pressure off of us,” he said.

“We’re always getting on base and working counts and putting pressure on the defense and pitcher. Now we just have to execute a little bit more often coming through with the big hit in that situation.”
