About the Mavs: They fell short of their goal of winning 50 games for the regular season but qualified for the playoffs after missing in 2013 for the first time since 2000. ... Dallas lost its regular-season finale to Memphis and fell to the No. 8, and final, seed in the Western Conference. ... The Mavs are in the playoffs for the 19th time in franchise history, including 13 of the past 14 years, and have an 86-93 playoff record. ... Dallas is 10-8 all-time in first-round playoff series after being swept in the first round by Oklahoma City in 2012. . ... The Mavs have lost nine straight to the Spurs since beating them March 17, 2012, including 0-4 this season. . ... On being swept by San Antonio this season, forward Dirk Nowitzki said: “I think we had some good outings on the road against other teams, but we haven’t put it together down there yet.”

About the Spurs: They’ve won four titles dating to 1999 and came close to winning a fifth one last year when they lost in a seven-game Finals against the Miami Heat. ... The Spurs and Mavs have met five times in the playoffs, with San Antonio holding a 3-2 edge. The Spurs beat the Mavs in the 2001, 2003 and 2010 playoffs, and the Mavs defeated the Spurs in the 2006 and 2009 postseason. ... The Spurs had the NBA’s best record this season at 62-20, own the No. 1 seed in the West and have home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.. ... On the Spurs, Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said: “They’ve got a great pick-and-roll game, they’ve got a great drive-and-kick game, so you’ve got be scrambling for 48 minutes.’’
