Trophy Club Nelson goalkeeper Chase Therrien had a chance to clinch a win over Frisco Wakeland and missed it.

He went high for a shootout kick and deflected the ball, ultimately letting it fall into the back of the net.

Therrien didn’t miss his next opportunity.

The junior saved a Wakeland shot in the eighth round of penalty kicks to give Nelson a 7-6 win in the shootout and claim the Class 4A semifinal with a 2-1 victory at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

The Bobcats will play Pharr Valley View, in the state championship game at 6 p.m. Saturday in Georgetown.

“I was aggravated that I got to it and palmed it away,” Therrien said of his first miss in the shootout. “But I just got a drink of water, forgot about the game, forgot about the fans and just did what I usually do.”

Nelson (27-1-2) fell behind Wakeland (22-5-3) in the sixth minute when Dylan Rakestraw deflected in a goal. Wakeland continued to press, getting good looks at goal in the 21st, 27th and 30th minutes. But Therrien was able to stave off the Wolverines long enough for Mason Shank to score a goal from a few yards out.

Nelson’s next best opportunity wouldn’t be until the 61st minute when Devin Porter launched a strike that was saved by Wakeland goalkeeper Sam Whaley.

Therrien went into shutdown mode from that point on, keeping the aggressive Wolverines out of the net until overtime, where he made three saves to force the shootout.

“He’s carried us, probably through two or three playoff games by coming up with big plays,” Nelson coach Howard Putter said. “He’s probably the hardest on himself, but he’s been like gold for us back there.”

•  Pharr Valley View 4, Houston Lee 1: Jose Soto, who entered Friday with 77 goals on the season, was held scoreless in the first half before breaking a 1-1 tie with a goal in the second half for Valley View (26-2). Erik Martinez had two goals on free kicks.
