Religious holidays

I am surprised that state Rep. Jonathan Stickland is surprised and confused by state law (Bud Kennedy column Friday, “Stickland takes up new crusade”).

For those of us who are not Christian and follow a different tradition — my family is Jewish — we have had to give our children excuse notes for every religious holiday, from Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur to the occasional “voluntary” pep rally that was on a Friday night.

We survived, sometimes humiliated by a school clerk who did not believe us (“Who has a holiday in the middle of the week?”) and often just angry, at the teacher who gave a pass day for a makeup test the day after Yom Kippur since “your child won’t be at Jewish Church all day.”

All I can say is, welcome to Texas, land of religious discrimination by ignorance.
