Richland pitcher Haley Freyman said she couldn’t ask for much more on senior night.

The Rebels avenged their only loss in District 4-5A with a 3-0 victory over Justin Northwest at Richland High School on Tuesday night.

With the victory, Richland (21-7, 13-1 4-5A) sets up a showdown for the district title against Keller on Friday. The loss ended Northwest’s playoff hopes.

Richland sits atop the standings, with Keller a game back after an 8-4 loss to Keller Timber Creek on Tuesday.

“You know we did what we needed to do to finish it off,” Freyman said. “Usually we’ve got more offense, but the focus now is Keller and a chance to win the district title.”

Freyman tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out five and picked up her 19th win this season.

Richland got the only runs it needed in the bottom of the second when Maddi Holcomb doubled home Skylar Castro for a 1-0 lead. Castro and Katie Jones started the rally with back-to-back walks.

Lauren Oatman’s single brought home two more.

Northwest (14-13, 6-7) couldn’t match the hitting and stranded two runners.

“I think we were a little excited tonight about senior night and I think we’re ready for the playoffs to start, too. But we still have work to do,” Freyman said.

Aside from the second inning, Northwest pitcher Tayah Issacs had a strong outing as well.

She gave up only four hits and struck out seven while not allowing a runner past second base in the final four innings.

The Texans never threatened with only one runner reaching second in the first inning.

“They were ready before the game, they stayed focused and did the job they needed to do,” Richland coach Brenda Jacobson said. “We faced a different pitcher last time and this one did better throwing around our hitters and throwing to different spots.”
