The best season got even better on Friday as Fort Worth Arlington Heights made its debut at the Class 4A Region I soccer tournament and earned a 2-0 victory over Canyon Randall.

The Yellow Jackets (18-2) will try to keep the dream going for another week when they play in the Region I championship match at a 11 a.m. Saturday against Trophy Club Nelson.

Heights played almost the entire semifinal with a 1-0 lead thanks to India Wentz, who took a pass from Payton Blanchard and scored in the ninth minute.

It was Heights’ fifth consecutive shutout in the playoffs.

“It was great to finally make it here; we worked pretty hard,” said senior Amanda Long, who assisted on the insurance goal scored by Riley Reynolds in the 80th minute.

Long was part of the unit that pressured Randall (19-5-2) in the final 15 minutes, keeping the Raiders from mounting a final charge. She also just missed a shot off the crossbar.

“Our defense holds the game together,” said Wentz, a sophomore midfielder. “They keep us intact and it goes forward with them. One goal is not enough for us.”

But the goal of getting to state is starting to feel within reach.

“It means the world to me,” Long said.

Heights coach David Rubinson didn’t feel comfortable throughout the game and thought if Randall “had scored once, they would have scored twice. They were good and took advantage of our mistakes.

“But I’m proud of the girls for how they battled. I’m proud of them. To our girls’ credit, they bend but don’t break often.”
