Vandergriff Park became home to a 21,000-square-foot skate park over the weekend.

Officially opened Saturday, the first phase, which costs about $1 million, includes plaza-style skate areas, a flow bowl and a snake run, along with multiple-level terrain areas designed for intermediate to skilled skaters.

Under a master plan, the skate park would top 40,000 square feet when completed.

Funding for the first phase came from the city’s 2008 bond program and gas lease revenue.

The site was chosen in 2011 during the development of the city’s skate park strategy. Several public meetings were held, including two at which local skaters of all ages offered ideas.
