The fine line between victory and defeat for the UT Arlington baseball team this season has been sharply drawn at six runs.

When the Mavericks reach or exceed that mark, they are almost unbeatable at 14-3. When they fall short as they did Tuesday in a nonconference game at Houston Baptist, they are perfectly beatable — as in 0-16.

HBU jumped on UTA starting pitcher Justin Schnedler for six runs in the second inning and cruised to a 7-4 victory.

But there were a handful of bright spots in defeat for the Mavericks (14-19). Their bullpen gave up only one run on five hits over 62/3 innings in relief of Schnedler, and Derek Miller, who entered the game hitting .356, went 2 for 5 and scored a run.

Brady Cox had a two-run double in the third inning.

Jordan McCoy and Clayton Vaughn led the Huskies (15-14) with two RBIs apiece, and Thomas Clay went 3 for 3 and had a stolen base.

UTA returns to Sun Belt Conference play for a three-game series at Georgia State beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.
