Latoya Alexander’s children heard the gunshots early Sunday that left their 35-year-old mother dead in her car in the driveway, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram late Monday.

Her estranged husband, Devanne Jones, 36, fled to Kansas, where he told a dispatcher that he shot Alexander and that he wanted to surrender, the affidavit says.

He remained in the Sumner County Jail in Wellington, Kan., on Tuesday, awaiting extradition to Texas. He faces a murder charge.

The shooting occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Juniper Drive in Arlington. A female caller told a dispatcher that someone was on her property shooting. Police did not identify that caller.

Other neighborhood residents also called to report the shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a 2012 Chevrolet Impala with its headlights on and engine running in the driveway. The driver’s-side front window had multiple bullet holes, and the front and rear door handles were missing, according to the affidavit.

Officers broke windows to get inside the Impala and found Alexander, who appeared to be dead from multiple gunshots, the affidavit says.

Detectives determined that Alexander’s children, one adult and one juvenile, were in the house when their mother arrived. They told police that they heard the garage door open, then gunshots, according to the affidavit.

Police found shell casings in the driveway, according to the affidavit.

Shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, Jones called 911 from a gas station near South Haven, Kan. The Kansas dispatcher told Arlington detectives that she stayed on the line with Jones and the store clerk until deputies arrived to arrest him.

Jones told Kansas authorities that he had a pistol in his car.

Sumner County is more than 340 miles north of Arlington on Interstate 35, more than a five-hour drive.
