When she holds cattle at bay, the cutting horse TGI Playtime has an attractive working style.

The mare, however, also can prevent a hard-moving cow from returning to the herd.

When the Classic/Challenge open division title was at stake Friday night during the National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes, TGI Playtime made the hard moves with great expression against three cattle during a 21/2- minute finals run at Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.

With Skip Queen, a former Lipan resident who lives in Allendale, S.C., as her rider, TGI Playtime clinched the title with a score of 223.

The victory earned the horse’s owner, Carrolls Cutting LLC of Weatherford, the $37,295 prize.

Two horses tied for the reserve championship after turning in 222.5s. They were Creepy Crawler and rider Luke Huggins and Short N Smooth and rider Jason Clark.

Queen, 45, said TGI Playtime can make the more difficult moves in order to fend off a testy cow.

“Her eye appeal and her stop are definitely her strong suit,” Queen said. “She’s very athletic and she has the style to go with it. She can make points even when she’s really not doing a whole lot. But then, when she has to, she can get physical also.”

TGI Playtime is a 5-year-old, second-year competitor on the NCHA’s aged event circuit. The Classic/Challenge division is for 5- and 6-year-old horses in their second and third year of competition.

“That mare has been good her whole career,” Queen said. “But in the past, she’s been a little wild and erratic. As a result, we would win first rounds. But as she’s matured, she’s gotten more consistent where you can depend on her in every round.”

During the final round, TGI Playtime was the second horse to work in the first bunch of cattle.

“The first horse didn’t interfere with the cows we wanted to cut,” Queen said. “I got all three cows that I wanted and they all were in great positions and that was an advantage.

“Usually, I like to be scheduled deeper or in the middle of a bunch, because it usually takes these cattle a few runs to get settled. But that wasn’t an issue tonight.”

CBR update

On the Championship Bull Riding circuit, Aaron Pass of Dallas is ranked No. l in the 2014 title race with 1,080 points.

Sage Steele Kimzey is ranked No. 2 with 899 and Cody Teel is No. 3 with 895.

The CBR tour will stop in the Fort Worth Stockyards. The 22nd annual Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge is scheduled for April 12 (8 p.m.) at Cowtown Coliseum.

Honoring a legend

A memorial service for 1984 World Champion Bullfighter Rick Chatman is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Cleburne.

Chatman, 57, died of an apparent heart attack on March 27.

The legendary bullfighter’s death came shortly after he was informed he had earned a spot in the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

Chatman will be inducted posthumously during ceremonies on April 12.
