Reigning state champion Coppell took another step toward defending its title with a 4-0 victory over Mansfield on Thursday night at Irving Schools Stadium.

The Cowboys opened the scoring just four minutes in.

Roberto Arguello found a little space near the top of the area. He spun and fired a low drive into the right side of the goal that eluded Tigers goalkeeper Kyle Kercher.

Coppell (21-1-2) then threatened several times on long throw-ins by Austin Micahelis.

They finally cashed in when Justin Todd headed one into the top portion of the goal from inside the 6-yard box.

Todd made it 3-0 in the 24th from close range.

The Cowboys controlled much of the run of play in the first half and prevented the Tigers from stringing together much possession.

Mansfield’s best opportunity of the half came in the 25th on a bending, right-footed shot from the left side that troubled Cowboys keeper Eric Benensen. But the Coppell defense managed to clear away the rebound.

The second half started much the same as the first.

Michaelis broke through down the middle of the Tigers’ defense, and only a fine effort by Kercher kept his low shot out of the net.

Coppell added a late goal when Mitchell Apple scored in the 77th.

His hard shot from close range caromed off the crossbar and the right post before barely crossing the goal line to make it 4-0.
