Fab or flub: Dove+Care Expert Shave

On a recent shopping trip to Target with my boyfriend, Robert, I found myself in the men’s section of the health and beauty aisle. Not surprisingly, the section was quite small and the products were limited.

While there’s no doubt that men are not the most important demographic of the beauty and skin-care industry, I think it’s fair to say that they deserve a little more love than they are getting.

So I was excited to find out that Dove had recently launched a premium line of shave products for men. Called Dove+Care Expert Shave, the line is a three-step approach to shaving designed in collaboration with a group of leading barbers and dermatologists.

The line features five products, including two shaving creams, a pre-shave exfoliator, a pre-shave oil and post-shave repair balm; they are sold separately. Used together, the products in the Expert Shave line provide a smooth shave and an advanced level of moisturizing before, during and after shaving. I found all the products at Target; they range from $22 to $26.

I asked my boyfriend to put them to the test. Coindidently, he recently had complained to me that he had begun getting blackheads above his lip where he shaves. I read on the Internet that blackheads caused by shaving can be due to improper pre-shave preparation and post-shave habits. Many skin-care sources recommend pre-shave exfoliants and moisturizing aftershaves to help.

Robert currently uses only shaving cream and a razor; the guy likes to keep it simple, what can I say? Knowing that Dove’s new line would require a little more effortthan he was use to, I wasn’t sure he if he would be down for testing it. But after some initial balking at the number of products in the line, he was happy to do so.

First impression

The first time Robert tried the products, I left him unsupervised. That, of course, wasn’t until after a long briefing of what each product was supposed to do and in which order he should use them.

To my surprise (and as a testament to the ease of using the products), he did very well. Starting with the Exfoliating Pre-Shave Scrub, he remarked how smooth and soft it left his skin. Robert said that he didn’t find the exfoliator irritating, and he did like how it helped to remove the dead skin and dirt from his face. This was great to hear, as this could be the cause of those pesky blackheads he had been dealing with.

After the exfoliator, he chose to forgo the Softening Pre-Shave Oil and go straight to the shaving cream. The line features two different ones, and he went with the Total Comfort Shave Cream. Immediately, he said, he could tell a difference.

Robert has been using Gilette’s Foamy Lemon Lime Shaving Cream and has found that it often dries out while he shaves and then leaves his skin feeling dry. The Total Comfort Shave Cream gave the opposite experience. Not only did it allow for a smooth shave without drying out, but it left his skin feeling soft and replenished with moisture.

To finish his shave, he used the Intense Post-Shave Repair Balm. Touting that it helps to repair skin damage, soothe irritation and rehydrate skin, the balm (just like the shave cream) also left his skin feeling soft and moisturized.

From my perspective, his skin felt even softer and smoother than it had before, and that was eight hours after he’d used the products. I also liked the slight fragrance they left behind. If you’ve ever smelled any of Dove’s Men+Care products, then you know that they have a very clean, refreshing fragrance.

Since I’m a firm believer in trying products more than once before making a final opinion, I had him reuse the products, including the Softening Pre-Shave Oil, a couple days later to get the full effect. This time around, I would be in attendance to see the shave go down and get his final verdict.

Fab or flub?

Fab! If there’s one thing I can say about the Dove Men+Care Expert Shave line, it’s that it has changed the way my boyfriend shaves. While he did not end up using the Smoothing Shave Cream, he was very impressed with the way that the Total Comfort Shave Cream worked. Dove’s creamlike formula restored moisture to his skin and made it easier to get a closer shave.

Having been a one-step shave men, Robert admitted that he also finally saw the benefits of introducing other products into his shaving routine. While he did end up trying the Softening Pre-Shave Oil, he said that he didn’t feel that it added to or took away from his shaving experience.

I asked him if he would recommend the products to other men even if it meant requiring a couple of extra minutes when shaving in the morning. “Sure. For nice skin, a couple of minutes isn’t going to kill you,” he said.

In the world of beauty and skin care, no truer words have been spoken.
