Tony Guzman scored his second goal of the night in the first overtime period to send Arlington Sam Houston to a 2-1 upset victory over Richland in a Class 5A bi-district playoff match at Pennington Field on Thursday.

The Texans (11-7-4) were the fourth seed from District 3-5A, while Richland (17-4-4) was the champion of 4-5A.

Guzman was a threat for Sam Houston from the opening kickoff. Just three minutes in, he was played through down the middle of the field. Rebels keeper Andrew Lyman came out to challenge and managed to get his right hand on Guzman’s shot to direct it wide.

Richland got on the board first in the 16th minute after Nick Johnson was fouled inside the penalty area. Cristian Cuadra stepped to the spot and slammed the ball into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.

The Texans almost answered immediately. Just a minute later, Sam Houston had the Rebels’ defense scrambling, but Luis Villanueva was in the right spot and cleared a potential Texans goal off the line.

Sam Houston equalized in the 27th minute. Again it was Guzman on a long run. He turned past his marker and raced 40 yards at goal before sliding the ball past Lyman to make the score 1-1.

Neither team managed to score in the second half of regulation.

Sam Houston’s best opportunity came in the 58th minute when Bryan Salas intercepted a Richland clearance and walked in on goal, but his tight-angle shot skidded wide.

Miguel Chavez threatened for Richland at the hour mark. His low shot forced Texans keeper Leo Lujan to dive and parry the ball along the face of goal, but he successfully kept it out.

Isaias Guerrero had a chance to win it for Richland in the final seconds with the ball at his feet 10 yards from goal, but he sent his spinning shot over the crossbar.

Eight minutes into the first overtime period, Sam Houston took its first lead behind Guzman’s second goal. Again, he was played through down the middle of the field and got the better of Lyman, firing into the right side of the goal to make it 2-1.

Richland’s best chance to level the score came in the 93rd minute when Guerrero’s headed cross was on target, but right at Lujan.
