After 11 years at the helm of the Tarleton State women’s basketball team, head coach Ronnie Hearne announced his retirement from coaching effective Aug. 31.

“I have loved every practice, the challenge of every game we’ve played and the challenge of each new season,” Hearne said at Wednesday’s news conference. “After saying that, I really don’t know why I’m retiring, but it is time for someone to take my place.”

Hearne retires with a .671 winning percentage, the highest in Tarleton State history, and with the second most wins with a career record of 212-107. Hearne guided the TexAnns to six NCAA Division II regional Tournaments, the only six in program history.

“I have been truly blessed to work at Tarleton State University,” Hearne said. “I have had some great teams and some great players. It’s like I got the cake when I got the job here and every day since then has been the icing.”

Before coaching at Tarleton, Hearne made 18 NAIA regional tournament appearances and compiled a 419-207 record in charge of Cisco Junior College.

The Tarleton State athletic department announced that assistant coach Misty Wilson will replace Hearne as lead of the program.

Wilson has been with the program since the 2002-03 season and has been a part of 219 Tarleton State victories and all six regional appearances.

Wesleyan faces test

Texas Wesleyan baseball travels to No. 11 Oklahoma City University for a three-game Sooner Athletic Conference series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.

The Rams (17-13, 8-4 SAC) sit a game behind Oklahoma City (20-8, 9-3) in the standings and have won four of their last five games after a nonconference win over UT Dallas and taking two of three from St. Gregory’s University in SAC play.

Senior pitcher Sam Martin leads the Rams with a 1.54 ERA, good for second in the conference. Martin has compiled a 5-0 record in seven starts and has thrown three complete games.
