Jesus Retana netted a hat trick as Mansfield Summit ran out to an early lead and never looked back in a dominating 4-0 win over Joshua on Tuesday night in a 4A Region I bi-district match at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

The Jaguars, the second seed from District 16-4A, opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Retana knocked in a header just beyond the punching arms of Joshua goalkeeper Joel Green.

Kevin Trejo almost doubled the Summit lead three minutes later when his shot from about 20 yards crashed off the crossbar.

The Jaguars did go up 2-0 in the 18th minute, when Matt Vafee put home a direct free kick from outside of 20 yards.

Retana notched his second of the night in the 35th minute, again using his head; this time, off a corner kick service from Trejo.

Summit led 3-0 at halftime and it probably should have been more.

“Any games we’ve been successful in are the ones where we can control the tempo right from the start,” Summit coach David McDonald said. “We just pushed and pushed and pushed as hard and fast as we could and tried to get an early goal. That was our strategy all along.”

Just 14 seconds into the second half, Retana completed his hat trick with yet another header, this time from just about the penalty spot as he was left unmarked to loop it over Green.

Joshua rarely threatened as Summit controlled most of the remaining run of play.

“We needed this game tonight; that was a big deal for us,” McDonald said.
