Colby Lewis has been called the “story of camp” by general manager Jon Daniels. He’s proven that he can still get big league hitters out months after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery.

But Lewis won’t make the Opening Day roster. He is scheduled to start the Cactus League finale on Wednesday and pitch again on April 1 in an exhibition game between Triple A Round Rock and Double A Frisco in Round Rock.

After that, Daniels said, has not been decided.

“Continue to build him up and get him to where he needs to be,” Daniels said.

Lewis’ next available date would be April 6 when the Rangers face the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

While Lewis won’t be ready by Opening Day, he’ll still be a part of the festivities before the Rangers-Phillies game on Monday afternoon.
