Bear down

Shawn Tolleson saw the beginnings of Baylor’s rise in the college basketball ranks from his years in Waco from 2007-10.

The Bears made their first NCAA Tournament under Scott Drew in 2008 and advanced to the Elite Eight two years later in 2010. The basketball stars during his time there ranged from LaceDarius Dunn to Ekpe Udoh to Perry Jones III.

So it’s no surprise that Tolleson is keeping a close eye on the Bears this March. He ordered pizza and happily watched Baylor roll to a 30-point victory over Creighton on Sunday to clinch a spot in the Sweet 16.

“I watched the whole game and they just dominated,” said Tolleson, a right-handed relief candidate fighting for a spot in the bullpen. “It was fun to watch.

“They’re on a run, man. Won 12 of their last 14 and are looking really good. I think they’re as good or better than any team left and they’ve got a chance to go a long way, if not all the way.”

Telling number

611 Wins by manager Ron Washington, who is entering his eighth season. That’s the most by a manager in franchise history.

He said it

“It’s always tough when you see teammates go down, and you hope they get better and they’re good to go soon. But we still have a great team. Guys are going to step up because we have great players behind them. We’re going to be ready to go March 31.” – shortstop Elvis Andrus on keeping high expectations despite the rash of injuries

Words of Wash

“I didn’t go back in the archives. I’m concerned about what Robbie can do right now, not what he did against some A ball team. I’m just concerned about what he can do at the major league level.” – on Robbie Ross’ track record as a minor-league starter factoring into a rotation decision
