TCU tries to shake shades of cursed 2013 against UTPA

TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle didn’t want to say it, but he did anyway.

For a few innings Sunday, the Horned Frogs looked a whole lot like the Horned Frogs from the first month of the season a year ago.

Fans might want to forget that agonizing run where it seemed TCU found new ways to let opponents score without hitting the ball hard. Wild pitches, passed balls, fielding errors. Until TCU slowly turned it around (at least defensively and on the mound) it was tough to watch.

Of course, offensive issues also plagued the team last year and eventually were too much to overcome.

So Schlossnagle bit his lip and said the obvious after Sunday’s 12-2 loss in which Texas Tech bunched together bunts and big doubles and took advantage of five wild pitches by TCU. Add in two throwing errors to first and a lackluster day at the plate and you can understand the frustration.

“That looked like us the first 25 games last year,” he said. “I’d like to assume that’s an aberration but only time will tell.”

The Frogs (13-10), who open a two-game series with UT Pan American (11-15) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lupton Stadium, had thrown only 12 wild pitches before Sunday.

TCU hopes to have Garrett Crain, who pinch-hit late Sunday, available full time later this week for a three-game series at Oklahoma State. He has been dealing with a separated shoulder.
