Mavs notes: Wright could be among leaders in shooting percentage

Brandan Wright has been so effective this season that the Dallas Mavericks center is shooting a lofty 66.9 percent from the field.

That number is good enough to lead the NBA, however Wright doesn’t have enough attempts to qualify in that department. The six-year veteran is only playing 18.1 minutes per game, as Samuel Dalembert, DeJuan Blair and Wright are sharing minutes.

“A gaudy field goal percentage to us don’t necessarily translate to blocking out well,” Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. “That’s where I reconcile the whole offensive efficiency versus challenges defensively, and the challenges against physical teams that look to turn it into a brawl instead of a ballet.

“Not that we want a ballet, but our kind of game is our kind of game.”

Like any player looking to contribute, Wright wishes Carlisle would call his number more often.

“You always want to play more minutes, but at the same time you just got to play what the coach gives you,” Wright said. “You can’t really focus on how many minutes you get, how many minutes you don’t get.”

Carlisle said matchups are one of the items that often drive which center he has in the game. Yet he has confidence that Wright can get the job done.

“He’s holding his own going against the physical guys,” Carlisle said. “He’s a valuable guy to us.

“I’m always looking to play guys more minutes if they’re playing well.”

Wright admits it’s difficult not knowing if he’s going to play 15, 20 or 25 minutes, but he still has to be prepared.

“It’s tough, but you just got to be ready,” Wright said. “You like to get more minutes, but at the same time you just got to play it out and see what happens. And roll with the punches.”

Sixer sympathy

Center Samuel Dalembert said he knows the folks in Philadelphia are not sleeping very well after the 76ers dropped their franchise-record 23rd game in a row Friday night against the New York Knicks, 93-92.

Selected by Philadelphia with the 26th overall pick on the first round of the 2001 draft, Dalembert played for the Sixers through the 2009-2010 season. He knows Philadelphia has a history of being very tough on its pro athletes and teams

“I’ve still got a home in Philly,’’ Dalembert said. “The fans, they’ll buy 15,000 tickets, but only 9,000 will show up because they’re upset. I can only imagine, because it’s a tough town.”

Mekel recalled

The Mavs recalled point guard Gal Mekel from the National Basketball Development League on Friday.

In four games for the Texas Legends, the rookie from Israel averaged 10.5 points, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals in 30.3 minutes per game.

• Sunday’s home game against Jason Kidd and the Brooklyn Nets will tip off at 6:30 p.m. A former Mavs player, Kidd is in his first season coaching the Nets.

• Owner Mark Cuban missed Friday’s game because he was in Los Angeles for filming of the movie version of Entourage.
