Keller’s softball team has added the long ball to its arsenal this season.

Behind a couple of home runs Friday night that surpassed a school record for the season, the Indians raced past Keller Timber Creek 6-3 in a District 4-5A game at Keller High School.

First baseman Shelby Henderson belted Keller’s 14th homer of the season and pinch hitter Kennedy Legg the 15th, breaking the single-season school mark of 14.

Keller (16-3, 6-0) still has eight regular-season games left on the schedule.

“We’re hitting the ball really well,” Keller coach Bryan Poehler said. “The thing about these girls is they have great chemistry, and we’ve proven in the last two games that we can beat the best teams in the district.”

The Indians lead 4-5A with a game remaining in the first half of district play.

Pitcher Kaylee Rogers improved to 8-1 on the season, allowing one earned run and scattering nine hits in a complete game. Rogers had three strikeouts. Keller’s defense had 15 infield outs.

Shortstop Kaitlyn Alderink, who was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk, also turned a double play to get Rogers out of a one-out jam in the fifth.

“Kaylee made some great pitches tonight and did the things we needed in shutting them down the final two innings,” Poehler said.

Timber Creek (12-6, 4-2) stayed with Keller most of the way before the Indians got three straight singles to open the bottom of the fifth.

The third single gave Henderson her third RBI of the game and Alderink later scored on a sacrifice to give Keller a two-run cushion.

Timber Creek’s Hailey Joiner was 2-3 with an RBI.

“We have to stop the mental errors and the runs will come for us,” Timber Creek coach Laura Moore said.
