Elvis Andrus is expected to play the field again in a week, which will give him a couple games at shortstop before Opening Day. Andrus, who is dealing with recurring right forearm soreness, believes that is sufficient enough for him to be on the field Day One.

Rangers physician Keith Meister examined Andrus on Friday and cleared him to begin a throwing program. The tentative plan is that it will be a seven-day program before Andrus returns to the field.

That puts Andrus back at shortstop during the Rangers’ two-game exhibition series against the Astros on March 28-29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Rangers then have an off day before opening the season March 31 against the Phillies at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

Andrus, 25, has never been on the disabled list in his first five seasons, but has been dealing with right forearm soreness most of spring. He didn’t play winter ball for the first time in his career and didn’t do enough to get his arm loose and ready for spring.

But Andrus has stayed engaged at the plate by getting at-bats during minor league games Thursday and Friday. He could also serve as the designated hitter during one of the Rangers’ final five Cactus League games.

Briefly

• Second baseman Jurickson Profar returned to the lineup seven pounds lighter Friday. It’s been tough for him to eat after having his wisdom teeth removed and another piece of bone removed Wednesday where a wisdom tooth had been.

• Right-hander Roman Mendez was optioned to Double A Frisco on Friday, leaving 38 players left in big league camp.

• Right-hander Justin Germano returned to camp Friday after dealing with a personal medical issue and met with coaches to discuss a throwing program.
