North Texas football coach Dan McCarney has a five-year extension worth $3.6 million, the school announced Thursday.

“I’m extremely appreciative of Rick Villarreal and President Neal Smatresk for their support and loyalty,” McCarney said in a statement released by UNT. “Our collective vision is to keep the Mean Green football program rolling, to strive for new heights and to add special chapters to the history books each year. I am so honored each day to lead this program at such a special university and community.”

The five-year deal has a base salary of $600,000, but could reach $850,000 with incentives.

McCarney has won 18 games in three years at North Texas, faster than any coach since Rod Rust in 1967-69.

UNT was 9-4 in 2013 and capped its seson with a 36-14 victory against UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

North Texas opens the 2014 season on Aug. 31 at Texas.
