UT Arlington owns its first winning streak of the season after beating Columbia 8-4 in Wednesday night’s nonconference game at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (7-14, 0-3 Sun Belt) are 2-0 on their six-game homestand. UTA hadn’t won consecutive games since a four-game winning streak in May of last season.

The Mavericks took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, sparked by Matt Shortall’s two-run home run to left off Lions starter Ty Wiest. John Michael Twichell added an RBI double in the inning.

Nick Maguire and Gus Craig each hit solo home runs for Columbia (5-9), which scored four runs from the third through fifth innings. But UTA maintained its cushion by scoring one run in each of the third through fifth innings. The Mavericks added another in the eighth to complete their offensive output.

Left-handed reliever Chase Weaver (2-0) picked up the win. He gave up one earned run in 4 1/3 innings of relief. UTA starter Justin Schnedler worked 3 2/3 innings and gave up three runs, two earned.

Eight starters had at least one of UTA’s 14 hits. Twichell and Ryan Bottgereach had three hits each. Derek Miller and Brady Cox each had two. Twichell and Darien McLemore joined Shortall with two RBI.

The Mavericks return to Sun Belt action Friday with the start of a three-game series against Arkansas State.
