TCU football notes: Trevone Boykin remains No. 1 QB, offensive line improved

TCU resumed spring practice Tuesday, its first since a scrimmage March 6.

Little of consequence happened during the closed scrimmage, coach Gary Patterson said. The team was off for spring break until Monday.

“A bunch of people standing up [without leverage] like they usually are in that first scrimmage for the last 17 years,” he said.

Of note, Jordan Moore, who was moved from running back to receiver at the beginning of camp, caught a touchdown pass on a vertical route.

Quarterback Trevone Boykin took most of the snaps with the first team and Tyler Matthews and Zach Allen worked mostly with the second and third teams.

“Nothing to write home to mother yet,” Patterson said of the backups.

O-line improved

Offensive linemen Tayo Fabuluje and Matt Pryor are both competing for starting jobs. But it may no longer be for the same spot. Pryor is working at guard this spring. Fabuluje is trying to lock down his former starting job at left tackle before leaving the program last summer.

“Both need to get in shape,” Patterson said. But overall, Patterson said, the health and depth at offensive line is vastly improved from a year ago.

“It’s not even close. When you’ve got three guys over 6-foot-7 and three guys over 350 [pounds].”

Tyler Junior College transfer Frank Kee, who attended Mansfield Timberview, is angling for a starting spot at guard. Patterson said Kee and junior Bobby Thompson both could win starting roles in the interior. Center Joey Hunt was named to the Rimington Award watch list Tuesday. With 13 career starts, he has the most experience on the offensive line.

“Good for him. Now he has to prove he belongs on it,” Patterson said.

Filling Perry’s shoes

Patterson said he’ll name a new Director of High School Relations and Recruiting when spring practice concludes, perhaps in late April or early May. The job was left vacant when Kenny Perry was named cornerbacks coach after Clay Jennings took a job at Arkansas.

“I’m going to wait until I have more time to really think about it,” Patterson said. “I don’t know if I’m going to split it or I’m going to make it the same.”

Patterson said he hasn’t had time to consider a replacement with the other changes to the staff and with spring practice in full swing.

“Kenny was kind of abnormal for that position because of the way he does things,” said Patterson, referring to Perry’s long résumé as a successful high school coach, most recently at Arlington Bowie. “We don’t have anybody exactly like him. How do you find the biggest strengths [of candidates] for everything else as we move forward?”

Patterson then joked that maybe one of the four media members standing around him could do the job and everyone had a good laugh.

Injury update

RB Kyle Hicks and WR David Porter both did not practice Tuesday because of minor injuries but Patterson said both could return before spring practice ends.

Quotable

“It’s probably his most natural position, if you can believe or not. If I could put some hurdles down the sideline he’d probably feel at home.” — Gary Patterson on Jordan Moore, who won the Big 12 title in 60-meter hurdles last month, being moved to receiver this spring
