The season isn’t over yet for TCU women’s basketball team. On Monday, the Horned Frogs earned an automatic bid to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

TCU will play its first-round game Wednesday at Colorado. The game time hasn’t been determined.

TCU received the automatic berth as the top Big 12 team remaining not selected to the NCAA Tournament. Oklahoma, which finished sixth in the 10-team league, was the final Big 12 team selected for the NCAA Tournament.

“Oklahoma showed up real early,” coach Jeff Mittie said. “We were watching with the players and you could see that they were excited to think that we were going to be the automatic qualifier.”

The fact that TCU was an automatic qualifier and didn’t have to vie for an at-large bid helped its chances on getting into the WNIT because the Frogs will not be able to host any games. Renovations on Daniel-Meyer Coliseum have already begun, leaving TCU to play all of its postseason games on the road.

“You’d always prefer to host, and our RPI ranking was probably high enough to do that, but we can draw some positives from going on the road as well,” Mittie said. “This team has played better on the road and we’ll have to carry that over into the postseason.”

The berth marks the first postseason appearance for the program since the 2010-11 season when TCU made a WNIT appearance, eventually losing to Oral Roberts in the second round.

It is the 12thtime in Mittie’s 15-year tenure at TCU the Horned Frogs have made a postseason appearance and the third time TCU has appeared in the WNIT tournament.

The Horned Frogs’ first WNIT appearance came in 2008 when TCU reached the tournament quarterfinals, losing to Colorado 96-90 in overtime.

“We want this to carry us forward into next season. Really for us, that started tonight,” Mittie said.
