White, Finnegan push TCU past Dartmouth

Word on the street was that TCU left fielder Boomer White might have been a little down on himself before the start of the season.

That’s not hard to believe, considering what baseball can do to the human psyche from time to time.

But what’s apparent now is that’s all in the past.

White has been one of the two most consistent baseball players at TCU this season.

The other is Brandon Finnegan, who with White again provided the punch that TCU needed in a series-opening 4-1 victory over Dartmouth on Friday at Lupton Stadium.

White extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 3 for 4 with three runs scored, and Finnegan, the nation’s top strikeout pitcher, was his usual salty self despite not having his best stuff.

The junior from Fort Worth struck out 10, gave up only two hits in seven innings and increased his nation-leading strikeout total to 55.

White, a sophomore from Houston Memorial, leads the Frogs with a .382 average and has reached safely in all of TCU’s 17 games.

“I definitely went through a week or so of [preseason] practice where I looked like I didn’t belong on the field,” White said.

“But I found it pretty quick. I feel like I’m swinging it great right now.”

White also had two of the Horned Frogs’ season-high five stolen bases on Friday, including a steal of home on a double steal involving Jeremie Fagnan from first that increased TCU’s lead to 2-0 in the fourth.

Derek Odell and Kyle Bacak each had RBIs for TCU (10-7).

“We need to get hot if we want to make a run and make some noise, which we know we can, especially with the pitching,” White said.

If there’s any such thing as a safe assumption, it might be the Frogs’ chances in any game Finnegan (3-2) pitches. In his five starts, he has struck out 10 or more four times.

Through four innings Friday, Finnegan had faced only one over the minimum.

Alex Young threw a perfect eighth in relief of Finnegan, and Riley Ferrell recorded his second save by getting the final out after Brian Trieglaff allowed Dartmouth’s only run.

The Frogs and the Big Green (1-3) continue with Game 2 at noon Saturday. Officials moved the time up to accommodate a forecast of thunderstorms. Game 3 is at 1 p.m. Sunday.
