Second baseman Jurickson Profar is expected to miss three to five days after having all four of his wisdom teeth removed Thursday afternoon, and the Texas Rangers aren’t concerned that the extractions will affect his status for Opening Day.

Profar still hasn’t played the field this spring because of right shoulder inflammation. He has been on a throwing program and was nearing game action before an issue with his teeth popped up four days ago.

Profar, 21, stopped by the Surprise Recreation Campus en route to the his 3 p.m. dental appointment, and didn’t see all the cause for concern.

“They say three to five days?” he said. “I don’t know why everyone’s making such a big deal about it. It’s just teeth. It has nothing to do with baseball.”

Perhaps those are the follies of youth, but Profar was dead set that he will be in the Rangers’ lineup March 31 against Philadelphia in the season opener.

“Yeah,” he said. “For sure.”

The Rangers are considering contingency plans in case the extraction hampers the progress Profar was making with this shoulder. He has been playing as the designated hitter, and that could be one possibility if he’s not cleared to throw until after the opener.

But neither he nor manager Ron Washington seemed overly concerned.

“He’s not going to lose it that fast,” Washington said. “His arm isn’t going to go limp.”
