Mansfield Lake Ridge pitcher Samantha Householder was chased from the first inning of a shutout loss Tuesday to Ennis.

Some 16 hours later, she was back and this time the outcome was different. Householder allowed a run on one hit in Lake Ridge’s 8-1 District 15-4A victory over Mansfield Summit.

The victory put Lake Ridge (10-7, 3-2 15-4A) in position to control its destiny in the chase for a playoff spot.

Lake Ridge coach Cindy Manley said it’s games like Wednesday’s that will give her team confidence.

“What we have to do now is figure out how to continue with this kind of consistency,” Manley said. “We gave up three walks, a hit batter and an error against Ennis before we had a chance to blink. But Samantha really showed how our entire team can wipe the slate clean and bounce back.”

Householder (3-5) had five strikeouts against Summit, and got some strong defense with seven infield putouts and six infield popouts.

Other than a first-inning single, Summit (7-7, 2-3) had only three other balls hit out of the infield, and all three were flyouts.

Householder also scored the game’s first run after reaching on a bunt single. Shortstop Lauren Blue brought her home on a triple to left-center. Cleanup hitter Maddie Farrow scored Blue on a bunt single and scored on a throwing error.

Summit pitcher Cheyenne Macias (5-8) gave up seven first-pitch hits.

“Our bats just left us today,” Summit coach Karah Kinder said. “You could see it in our eyes today, we were just flat and even afterward, I’m at a loss to explain it.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes that you just can’t make in games like this.”
