One day after salvaging what would have been a disastrous weekend, UT Arlington gets a chance to head into conference play on a high note by hosting Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

There’s reason to believe UTA can win its first game at Globe Life since the Mavericks started hosting games there last season, considering they’ve beaten the Sooners in their last two meetings. The Mavericks lost to Texas A&M 5-4 on March 4 and fell to TCU last season.

But whether it’s a win over Oklahoma or a win before conference play begins, the Mavericks need a win simply to get on a roll. They haven’t strung two wins together all season despite playing 10 of their first 15 games at home.

After dropping two of the first three games this weekend, the Mavericks overcame a third-inning deficit to pound out a 9-3 win over Utah on Monday to split the weekend.

They got production from Matt Shortall, who went 9 for 18 with a homer and six RBIs in the past four games to raise his average to .384. He has a team-high 15 RBIs for the year, followed by Greg McCall’s 13.

Even though they’re the third-best offensive team in the Sun Belt, the Mavericks (5-10) simply haven’t done enough to overcome their starting pitching woes. Of the 15 runs they allowed in the last four games, 12 were surrendered by a starting pitcher.

Playing their fifth game in as many days, the Mavericks will use senior bullpen arm Chase Weaver (1-0, 3.45 ERA) against the Sooners.

He’ll be tasked with cooling off Oklahoma (11-5), which has scored 29 runs in its last three games.
