Byron Nelson (15-2-5, 5-0-4) had been in a good position to win the outright girls soccer district championship and still is.But a 1-1 tie against Birdville last Friday put those plans on hold. The Lady Bobcats are tied for the lead with Denton Guyer. Birdville is one point behind. That shows the talent and the depth of this district. Last week, we pointed out that three of the top 10 teams in 4A are from this district.“We got a 2-0 lead against Denton and kind of packed it in,” Nelson coach Philip Salyer said. “I was not pleased with the way we finished that game. I thought we had two good days of practice after that.“But we gave up a goal in the last 30 seconds on their only shot of the half. We played really well defensively and we controlled the flow.”Nelson still has a chance to win the outright championship because of how it finishes. The Lady Bobcats close on March 18 against Argyle, a team fighting for a playoff spot.Guyer and Birdville play each other the same day. Should Nelson win and those two tie, or if Birdville wins, Nelson would win the outright district title. If Nelson wins and Guyer wins, they share the title. Tiebreakers would settle who earns the top seed. Nelson and Guyer tied in both of their matches. If Nelson loses and those teams tie, Guyer wins the district and Nelson and Birdville would tie for second. However, Nelson would get the second seed as it has defeated and tied Birdville. Birdville could win the championship if it beats Guyer and Nelson loses.Salyer said the focus of this week would be finding a second quality scorer behind senior Madison Hall. The forward has scored 23 goals. The second leading goal scorer is sophomore Jeyci Lopez with eight. The team will return to practice at the end of this week.Like father, like daughterSophomore defender Katina Tsapos is back after missing most of district with an injury. She seems to have picked up where she left off.Tsapos’ defense has helped the Lady Bobcats become district champion contenders. A team captain, she is the daughter of Colleyville Heritage coach Misail Tsapos. Tsapos has an offer from SMU and is being heavily recruited by Houston and Mississippi State.“She’s a talented player and respected by her teammates,” Salyer said. “She knows the game so well. I’ve had to use her at midfield to generate more of an offensive attack at times. But she’s so valuable on defense because she’s technical and smart.”Northwest updateLincoln Hunt’s team endured a tough week last week. That was to be expected because it was coming against playoff teams. The Lady Texans (3-14, 2-9 in District 4-5A) lost to Carroll, 9-0, and Keller Timber Creek, 6-0. Before they hit spring break this week, the Lady Texans played another playoff bound team in Keller on Monday.
