New Texas Longhorns coach Charlie Strong told CBSSports.com in a story Saturday that he is all for playing the Aggies again.

“It’s all about the two ADs getting together and getting that figured out,” Strong said in the interview. “When you look at it, it’s been such a huge rivalry game. ... I think at some point it will get worked out.

“When there’s been so much tradition there, you’d like to see it continue on. That’s my feeling on it. I’d love to play it.”

Strong also said he’s game to play the Aggies at a neutral site.

“You’d like to play it in a neutral site somewhere, where every year it’s in that spot, whether it’s Houston or Dallas,” Strong said.

The Texas-Texas A&M rivalry began in the 1890s but was last played in 2011, a divorce punctuated by the Aggies’ move from the Big 12 to the SEC.

Former Texas AD DeLoss Dodds seemed hopeful in early 2013 that the game could be played again, perhaps after 2018.

Texas A&M associate AD Jason Cook told the San Antonio Express-News in November that the Aggies hoped to one day play Texas in the College Football Playoff.

UTA softball

UT Arlington took an early lead, but couldn’t make it stand up in a 2-1 loss to Abilene Christian in eight innings at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock

Freshman Shelbi Sikes hit her second home run of the season in the bottom of third over the center-field wall to put the Mavericks up 1-0.

ACU tied the game in the sixth and went ahead in the eighth on a error. UTA couldn’t match the run in the bottom of the inning.

The Mavericks (13-10) slipped to to 2-2 in the tournament and will close the classic at 10 a.m. Sunday today against New Mexico State.

Briefly

• UT Arlington women’s tennis: The Mavericks swept Louisiana-Monroe 4-0 at Heard Stadium in Monroe. UTA plays Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m. Monday at the UTA Tennis Center.

• North Texas softball: Brooke Foster helped the Mean Green open its C-USA era with a sweep of Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro, beating the Blue Raiders 5-1 and 8-1. Foster had a three-run home run to center field in the first game and a two-run double in the second game. She had six hits in 10 at-bats in the two games for UNT (15-5).
