Cuban believes the NBA should add more rounds to the draft

The NBA Draft has been two rounds since Mark Cuban became the Dallas Mavericks’ owner on Jan. 4, 2000.

But he would like to see that expanded.

“I’d like to see four rounds so you can draft guys overseas, get more guys drafted that are your property so you can try to develop them,” Cuban said before Friday’s game against Portland.

“Because once they get into the ‘I’m a free agent, I wasn’t drafted grind,’ ... you’ve got to realize that toward the bottom of the second round there are teams that pick for financial reasons, and that takes advantage of guys that might have otherwise been picked.

“Rather than me making a call, ‘Hey, so-and-so, you’re the 61st pick in the NBA draft,’ It would be better to have the draft [expanded], but again, it’s not my say.”

Emotional passing

Rick Carlisle got emotional when he started his pre-game press conference by telling the media that James Coleman, a parking garage attendant at American Airlines Center, died Wednesday night of lung cancer.

“He was Stage 4 lung cancer for a long period of time,” Carlisle said. “This guy was always in a great mood, always super optimistic.

“I got a text from him [Wednesday night], and he was going into the hospital. He occasionally sent updates, and that was the night of the Denver game he passed away, and I just wanted to mention him. He was a special guy that I knew for six years here.”

Cuban vs. Brown

After SMU coach Larry Brown said in a radio interview that the D-League “don’t teach guys how to play,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said: “Maybe we’ll hire him.”

Brown also said the college basketball system “is the greatest minor league system in the world.”

Cuban took exception to that, saying: “That’s an incentive for us to improve to National Basketball Development League. But the good news is we don’t have the NCAA watching us, so we can do it.”
