Schools were closed, bridges were slick and homeless shelters packed Monday morning as a nasty blast of cold air kept a frigid grip on North Texas.

Surprisingly, the freezing temperatures did not set a record.

“Most record lows in March are in the 20s,” said meteorologist Dennis Cavanaugh with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. “For March 3, the lowest just happens to be a record-record low of 10 degrees in 1943. That doesn’t change the fact that it was cold.”

While most of the ice will be gone, temperatures will remain below freezing through Tuesday morning, then warm up to a high near 50.
