By the end of TCU’s 15 days of spring practice, coaches will have seen enough to make the necessary evaluations to determine who will suit up in some key spots in the fall.

The decision on who leads the new pass-oriented offense under new coordinators Doug Meacham and Sonny Cumbie won’t be among them.

The starter might not even be enrolled in school at this point.

Trevone Boykin returns with the most experience at quarterback with parts of two seasons as the starter. Behind him on the spring depth chart is sophomore-to-be Tyler Matthews and redshirt freshman Zach Allen.

All three will rotate over the next three weeks.

On the sideline Saturday watching TCU’s first day of spring practice were highly touted recruits Foster Sawyer and Grayson Muehlstein. Both are finishing their senior years in high school at Fort Worth All Saints and Decatur.

“I haven’t even thought about it,” coach Gary Patterson said when asked if someone other than Boykin would emerge in the fall so the athletic junior can make a permanent move to wide receiver.

The offense struggled in 2013 under Boykin and Casey Pachall, who has left school to pursue work in the NFL.

Boykin was the only player in the nation last year with games of 100 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving and 200 yards passing.

“I think everybody here understands the urgency of getting better and being who we want to be,” Patterson said.

Coaching shuffle

In addition to Cumbie, who will also coach quarterbacks, and Meacham, former co-offensive coordinators Jarrett Anderson and Rusty Burns remained on staff but were reassigned to offensive line coach and outside receivers, respectively.

Curtis Luper has been moved to running backs coach after coaching wide receivers last season. Meacham will also coach inside receivers.

Also reassigned were Eddie Williamson, the new director of player personnel on offense, and former tight ends coach Dan Sharp, who is director of player personnel for special teams.

On defense, Kenny Perry appears to be in line to take over for cornerbacks coach Clay Jennings, who left for Arkansas.

Perry, director of high school relations and recruiting after a long tenure as a high school coach in the Arlington school district, is working with the cornerbacks this spring.

Briefly

• Receivers Cameron Echols-Luper and Kolby Listenbee and running back Jordan Moore were competing at the Big 12 track and field championships on Saturday.

• Offensive tackle Tayo Fabuluje is back after a second stint at BYU. The 6-foot-7, 315-pounder originally signed with the Cougars out of Euless Trinity before transferring a first time to TCU. He sat out, per NCAA regulations, and played for the Frogs in 2012 before returning to BYU as a student. Fabuluje has one season of eligibility left.

• Former TCU all-American cornerback Jason Verrett will be avaiable to sign autographs at the Moncrief Club from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
