Timely shooting in the second half put the UT Arlington women’s basketball team over the top in a 85-72 victory over Georgia State on Wednesday at College Park Center to complete a season sweep of the Panthers.

After taking a 44-35 lead into the halftime break, the Mavericks (4-22, 3-12 Sun Belt) had to weather 11-1 and 8-0 runs down the stretch by the Panthers (12-15, 8-7). But every time Georgia State grabbed momentum, UTA answered.

Guard Ashley Watson led Georgia State with 17 points, and her jumper with 13 minutes left pulled the Panthers within one, 51-50. However, UTA guard Allea Harris scored the next five points on a leaner and a 3-pointer to get the Mavericks back on track.

Harris finished with 13 points, her best performance since scoring a career-high 19 against VCU in November.

“She’s a shooter; that’s what she does,” UTA coach Krista Gerlich said of Harris, who hit three 3-pointers. “We were really looking to take what we could get against [Georgia State’s] zone, and we’re really proud of what she was able to do.”

Guard Tahlia Pope led UTA with 15 points, and Desherra Nwanguma and Briana Walker added 12 apiece.

But it was the shooting of Chauntandra Williams that put the Mavericks over the top. She made two 3-pointers during a decisive 18-8 run in the final five minutes.
