After playing a scoreless 80 minutes, it was goalkeeper Max Mankin’s save in the sixth round of a shootout Tuesday that gave Arlington High a 1-0 victory over Arlington Lamar at Arlington High School.

“You never want to go to a shootout, but our goalkeeper has been in this situation before, so we were pretty confident that he could stop a couple,” Colts coach Jeff Waldrop said.

The game, which was initially delayed by lightning, wasn’t without its chances.

In the 24th minute, Jesus Garcia one-timed a set piece just wide of the Vikings’ goal. It was the beginning of a stretch of about 10 minutes that Arlington (11-4-2, 4-3-2 District 3-5A) dominated the game.

In the 33rd minute, Reggie Gonzalez appeared to be brought down inside the box, but the Colts’ appeals for a penalty weren’t answered.

The best chance of the first half, though, came from the foot of Lamar’s Osseil Maldonado, who latched onto a poor clearance from about 35 yards out and struck the crossbar.

Lamar (5-9-2, 3-3-3) thought it took the lead early in the second half when Nick McCaskill appeared to score off a set piece from Joseph Garcia, but the play was judged offside.

The Vikings had another opportunity to win it late, when Maldonado’s cross found Larry Issac, but he couldn’t direct his flick on goal and regulation time expired shortly after.

Lamar and Arlington entered the game separated by just one point for the fourth and final playoff berth in District 3-5A.

“I hate to be cliché, but each game is important,” Waldrop said.
