Backup power boosts Mansfield Summit boys past Mansfield Lake Ridge

A

Mansfield Summit guard Corinthian Ramsey lay in wait during most of Tuesday’s Class 4A Region II quarterfinal.

And why not, as Summit’s bench and inside game kept the Jaguars within reach of Mansfield Lake Ridge most of the night.

Ramsey, though, hit 4 of 4 free throws and had a key layup off his own steal late in the fourth quarter to lead Summit to a 60-49 win over the Eagles at Legacy High School.

The Jaguars (21-11), who beat Lake Ridge all three times the teams played this season, advance to face Dallas Kimball at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the second of two semifinals at the Culwell Center in Garland.

“You can’t really put into words sometimes what Corinthian can do,” Summit coach Jason Mutterer said. “But tonight, our bench was fantastic. We got the kind of performances that you need to still be playing this late in the season.”

Lovell Cabbil turned in one of those efforts, scoring 22 points that included a couple of lead-building jumpers early on.

Lake Ridge (22-9) rallied from as much as an 11-point deficit before Summit’s offense came alive in the final quarter.

Cabbil’s 3-pointer early in the final period gave Summit the lead for good and started an 18-6 run to close the game.

“I hit that first jumper and heard the crowd and I don’t know, it was fun,” Cabbil said. “I think tonight we showed how balanced of a team we are; it’s not just Corinthian, but we’ve got some great guards and our big man is quicker than most.”

Ramsey finished with 16 points and Terrance Hubby added 11 and eight rebounds for Summit.

Lake Ridge, which had as much as a four-point lead early in the third quarter, got 20 points and five rebounds from Jacob Van and nine points from Isaak Rowe.

Van dropped three 3s in the second quarter to help Lake Ridge to a 29-25 halftime lead.

Mutterer said his team would enjoy the win on the bus ride home, but that the work toward facing Kimball starts immediately.

“I think when you get this late into the season, it’s more about just playing and working on the things you do right,” he said.
