Derrick Robertson didn’t sleep much Friday night, and he woke up early Saturday. The first-year head coach had led his Fort Worth Trimble Tech girls team to within a game of the school’s first state tournament berth.

And he knew all too well the challenge his Bulldogs would get in 15-time state winner Canyon.

The Eagles lived up to their playoff pedigree, but not without some push-back from Trimble Tech, which fell to Canyon 49-30 in the Class 4A Region I final at The Coliseum.

Canyon (32-4) jumped out to a 19-1 lead after the first quarter, but Trimble Tech’s defense kept it in the game from that point on. The Bulldogs (30-6) limited Canyon to three points in the second quarter and four points in the third quarter.

At the 6:36 mark of the fourth quarter Saturday, Trimble Tech trailed 28-25, a basket away from tying the game. Canyon then asserted itself as quickly it did to open the game, going on a 7-0 run to get its lead back to double digits with 5:09 left in the game.

From there, Canyon iced the game at the line, hitting 15 of its next 17 free throw attempts. The Eagles attempted 42 free throws to Trimble Tech’s 15.

LaKendrea Bassett led Trimble Tech with 12 points, earning all-regional tournament honors. Canyon’s Madison Parker grabbed 11 rebounds on her way to the tournament MVP award.

Trimble Tech shot 18.5 percent from the field (10-of-54) and scored a season-low 14 points.

“They never stopped fighting,” Robertson said. “Shots just weren’t falling — not jump shots, not layups. It just wasn’t our night.”
